History and Background
Hope Clinic for Women was founded March 1983 as the ‘ Crisis Pregnancy Support Center’.
Hope Clinic was founded by group of pastors, priests, physicians and concerned leaders in the community who felt there was no place a woman could go in an unplanned pregnancy that was: a SAFE place and CONFIDENTIAL place FOCUSED ON THEM to listen to them, provide support, without a political or material benefit from the outcome. Words many of our clients choose to describe Hope Clinic: Grace, forgiveness, hope, mercy, safe, confidential, and compassion.
2008 marks our 25 th Anniversary. We celebrate serving more than 30,000 onsite and seeing lives touched and changed.
How has it evolved and grown since then?
Hope Clinic has moved from dealing with immediate crisis of helping a young woman during the early part of an unplanned pregnancy to more consciously walking with her throughout the entire pregnancy. The other added services help women BEFORE and AFTER a crisis pregnancy; with the focus on helping women realizing the purpose and potential God has for each of them, while equipping her to make healthier long lasting life choices.
The specific program and vision changes were:
- Post Abortion Counseling - Hope Clinic learned that there were post abortive women living with regret from their decision with no apparent place to deal with it so we added our post abortion counseling; pioneering in our area that concept; relating to similar symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder.
- Prevention - In 1998 Nashville had the highest Syphilis rate in the country and ranked in the top 10 or highest recorded sexually transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancies. The state began an abstinence grant program; launching our Prevention program, making us one of leaders even today in training young people on abstinence.
- We realized there were many students trying to be abstinent who did not have the tools to ‘live that out’. Our program went beyond ‘just say no’ to handle the day to day challenges that arise.
- Besides education and equipping over 5,000 students a year on healthy choices, this program is essential in letting young people know more about Hope Clinic in case they or their peers who ever face an unplanned pregnancy.
- Medical Services –
- In 2001 Hope Clinic became a medical clinic to provide limited ultrasounds: a pure medical way for women to confirm the pregnancy, determine viability of the fetus, and more accurate wks of pregnancy.
- In 2001 we also added STD testing/treatment to further reach clients PRIOR to a pregnancy in hopes of:
- Treat quickly, safely, confidentiality to those who would be afraid to go to their own OB
- Educate young women to make healthier future choices to prevent unplanned pregnancies
- Create a relationship in case they or a friend ever needed services for a future unplanned pregnancy.
Where are we going in the future?
- Pregnancy Services are expanded – 2007 & 2008
- Counseling for the male partner and parent of our female clients - They are a large influence on female’s immediate decisions and because they have their own issues that if go unmet; impact her/child long term health.
- Spring Hill office – Hope Clinic reviewed surrounding counties to see if there was an area not reached by a pregnancy center. We realized the larger gap was for young women in Williamson and Maury county. We also realized these areas make up 60% of our volunteer and donor base, so of course we would want to serve the very communities where our support base came from. This office opens February 2008.
- Home for Moms and babies – our clients were either choosing adoption, abortion or moving 5+ hrs away b/c there was no other housing option during pregnancy and nothing available for care, training and safety following delivery to give them ‘time’ to get on their feet.
